How to prepare your motorcycle for the new season: 10-point checklist
After a winter in the garage, a motorcycle needs a little attention before the first ride. Go through this checklist and you will avoid most spring surprises.
The checklist
- Battery. Charge it fully and check the voltage: a healthy 12V battery shows about 12.6 V at rest.
- Tyres. Check pressure, tread depth and look for cracks on the sidewalls.
- Brakes. Check pad thickness and brake fluid level. Fluid older than two years should be replaced.
- Chain. Clean, lubricate and adjust the slack.
- Engine oil. If it was not changed before winter, change it now together with the filter.
- Coolant. Check the level in the expansion tank.
- Lights. Headlight, brake light and indicators must all work.
- Cables and controls. Throttle should snap back, clutch should move freely.
- Fuel. Old fuel loses quality, top up with fresh fuel.
- Documents. Check insurance and registration dates.
The first ride
Ride gently for the first few kilometres. Tyres are cold, roads are dusty after winter and your skills need a moment to come back.
